Effective Use of Video in Social Media

Effective use of video on social media

As information is becoming easier to find and digest, many consumers are getting lazier and lazier! No one wants to read a paragraph of text when they can watch a quick how-to video on their smartphone.

According to Vidyard, a whopping 82% of internet traffic will come from video content in 2020. This means that if you want to succeed in the digital space today, you have to leverage video content!

In 2020, almost every business uses social media as a marketing tool. But the majority of social posts just aren’t that unhelpful…or entertaining. This is where video comes in. The best way to stand out is to create video content that engages, entertains and informs your audience.

More importantly, viewers retain 95% of the message when they watch it in a video, compared to just 10% when they read it in text. Not only will video drive more traffic to your website, it will also do a better job of communicating your message.

Now that you know how important it is to leverage video on social media, how do you do it?

(If you don’t want anything to do with social media or video.. Skip to the last 2 paragraphs!)

The most important part of your video is the first three seconds. If viewers are intrigued by the first three seconds of the video, they will watch the next 35. The most successful formula for social video is short and sweet.

Types of videos that are great for Facebook/LinkedIn:

  • Interview/Q&A

  • Behind-the-scenes

  • Feature/product video

  • Live videos

  • Promos and Deals

  • User-generated content

  • Giveaways and contests

  • Announcements/reveals

  • Events

  • Breaking news/trending

  • Tutorials/How-tos

When creating one of these videos, remember:

  • Entertain, inspire or educate

  • Be attention-grabbing

  • Add captions

  • Keep it short

  • Try a new view

  • Upload natively

You don’t need any fancy equipment. A newer smartphone with a camera will do just fine. And the best part about video, you can repurpose and reuse your content on multiple platforms. For example, if you create a promotional video for your website or a how-to video for YouTube, a snippet from the video would work great on social media.
