Construction jobs are on the move — but not in one direction.

Between July 2024–July 2025, 31 states (plus D.C.) added construction jobs while 19 states lost them. Big movers:

  • Texas: +27,000 jobs

  • Ohio: +13,600 jobs

  • New Mexico: +14.3% (largest % gain)

  • California: -18,200 jobs (largest loss)

Month-to-month tells a similar story: 22 states up, 22 down, 6 flat.

What’s driving the swings? Contractors are caught between shifting tariffs, labor rules, and funding uncertainty. Owners are hitting pause on projects, while labor shortages force sudden slowdowns.

For distributors, that means a market where demand can flip fast — and the ability to pivot with your customers matters more than ever.
